We love to go places, see things and taste the cuisine. Most of the time you will find us wandering around the USA in our camper and truck but sometimes we like to get on a plane and go somewhere magical. Come along with us on our trips as we explore the country and the world around us! Toby says "Woof".
We loaded up the camper and took off for a road trip through Southern Colorado and New Mexico which included stopping in Albuquwerque to see the start of the International Balloon Fiesta. We traveled through Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Mesa Verde to see the Pueblo cliff dwellings, we did the Durango to Silverton train ride, then to Albuquwerque to see the balloons. Megan and Cody join us here and traveled with us to Santa Fe. From there we went to Taos then to Great Sand Dunes National Park where we hiked the High Dune Trail. Then to Colorado Springs for all it has to offer.
We loaded up the camper and took off for San Diego to grandkids could babysit me while Dana and Joe took a long needed vacation. On our way we decided to stop and see some of our countries beautiful National Parks. We stopped at Bryce NP, Zion NP and Joshua Tre3e NP along the way. I went to college at UC Riverside so Joshua Tree was a very familiar hangout for me while I was living in Riverside. This tripk was full of mishaps including loosing the trailer brakes on the RV and having the awning ripped off by a tree branch in front of Dana and Joe's house! But it was a great trip anyway.
This trip has been years in the making (mostly convincing Adrienne to go) but we are finally getting ready for what will likely be the most epic adventures of our lifetime. We have 42 destinations to visit in 92 days covering 9,000 miles. We have decided not to schedule much of this trip and we'll try our hand at 'just in time reservations'. We have reservations for some big ticket items and some (but not much) slack built into the schedule to help us deal with the unexpected. Wish us luck and follow us on our blog on the front page of this site.
We decided to go to Scotland for a wintertime visit. While it is cold and wet in the winters, it did not stop us from getting out and exploring. We stayed in a beautiful resort in the middle of nowhere with no transportation options to go anywhere. After a few days of this we decided to move to Edinburgh which is a beautiful old midevil city and the home of the Christmas Market and Edinburgh Castle. I would love to go back in August sometime.
This was an epic 7 week trips across middle America down to the Florida Keys where we spent 2 weeks. We visited Memphis, Nashville, Smoky Mountains, Congaree, St. Augustine, Titusville, Key Largo, Key West, Sarasota, Pensacola, New Orleans, Vicksburg, Hot Springs and then home. Toby had a blast at the dog parks.
We set off with Charlie and Joanie on a 3 week adventure to visit Arches NP, Canyonlands NP, Capital Reef NP, The Grand Staircase - Escalante NM and Dinosaur NM. It was a wonderful trip filled with adventure.

When was the last time you set eyes on or touched a rock hat is 2 billion years old? Our first stop on our Balloon Festival Road trip was Black Canyon of the Gunnison. This is a deep canyon that was cut in the valley floor by the Gunnison River after volcanic activity and earthquakes open up a fissure in the valley floor. We had the opportunity to explore the canyon rim, the bottom of the canyon and hike several trails that took us into the canyon and along the plateau at the top. The colors, and composition of the rocks was breathtaking.
The next stop on our road trip was Mesa Verde, the home of the Pueblo Indians starting around 550AD for 750 years until the 1300's. It is a magical place to visit with the a sophisticated community structure, amazing cliff houses for protection and abundant food because of the great agricultural conditions of the land around Mesa Verde. If you listen, you can hear the voices of the ancients.
During our first day at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, we attended one of the premier events. The Twilight Twinkle Glow is a night time exhibition where a few pilots light up their balloons in the dark while most of the other pilots ignite their burners around the few balloons that are inflated. It gives a panorama of flames shooting into the air with several inflated balloons illuminate in the darkness. It is a sight to behold and is followed by a spectacular drone show and fireworks.
We got up early Sunday morning and got on a bus at 5:00 AM to go down and see the Dawn Patrol and Mass Ascension of the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. It was cold and dark but we got a great position to watch the festivities! Dawn Patrol is a group of 10 balloons that go up at night just before dawn. You get to see them all lit up right before sunrise. After that, all of the participants get ready for the Mass Ascension where all of the balloons are launched over a 2 to 3 hour period. All shapes, all size and many funny characters will be floating overhead. It is a sight to behold!
During our first day at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, I had the pleasure to talk to Susan Lindsey of AZ Air Ventures and balloon pilot for Just Duckie. This is her story of how she became a balloon pilot along with her husband Greg Lindsey. She also tells the story behind her balloon, Just Duckie, and her husband's balloon, Flying Awaysis. I hope you enjoy!
One of the things we did while in Great Sand Dunes NP was to hike to the High Dune on First Ridge Trail which takes you to the top of the 2nd highest sand dune in the park. Its only 3 miles long out and back and ~650 ft of elevation gain but you are walking in sand the whole way and it gets very, very hard to make progress uphill. It was great hike and something I am so glad I did. It made we think about walking across the Sahara Desert and what the chances of survival would be like.
On March 11, 2024 we took off for San Diego so our grandkids could babysit us for a week. The first stop along the way was Bryce Canyon NP and it did not disappoint! We hiked the Rim Trail with it's spectacular vistas and the Queen's Garden - Peekaboo Canyon - Navajo Trail where you hike down into the canyon and walk among the hoodoos. Oh course hiking back to the rim meant 23 switchbacks and a lot of hard work. We also visited the Mossy Cave. The last day we were trapped inside our RV while a snow storm raged outside. I hope you enjoy this video. If you do, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel. See you on the next stop of our journey!
What an amazing adventure this turned out to be. The weather was perfect and the trail was as good as could be expected. Probably the biggest struggle on this hike was overcoming my fear of heights. While I still have a long way to go, this and Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon have done a lot to boost my confidence that I can do these things. I hope you enjoy this video. If you do, please give us a LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel. Now, sit back and enjoy the hike.
This episode covers our trip from Joshua Tree to Chula Vista to babysit our Grandkids including a brief stop at UCR, where I went to college. We had a few mishaps enroute which I touch on but the real story is Grandma and I settling in with our 3 Grandkids while their Mom and Dad take off for a much needed vacation. We had a blast with the kids and did a lot of exciting things.
During our babysitting adventure, the Grandkids decided they were going to take Grandma and me camping for a few days. We ended up at a KOA in the Boulevard/Cleveland national forest. There were pigs and ostriches at the petting zoo and a coy pond as well. There was also a zip line for the kids and that was the hit of the whole trip. But there were many places to explore and many Smores to be eaten. It was a great trip to for our grandkids to share with us.
We started our Alaskan Road Trip on June 1st with our first stop at Devil's Tower in Wyoming. We then traveled to Hardin, MT where we visited The Little Big Horn Battlefield of Custer's Last Stand. The following day we went hiking in the Big Horn Canyon area where we were surprised to see a Supercell passing by as we were leaving the area around Arapoosh Pond. Boy... were we surprised... and lucky!
On June 4 of our Alaskan Road Trip, we arrived at Great Falls, MT where we had 1 full day to visit the sights. We spent our free time hiking Riverside Park, visiting Ryan Falls and going to the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. Our evening entertainment was a visit to the Sip & Dip Lounge where mermaids swam in the pool with windows to the bar. What a great time we had!
On June 7, 2023, we headed for Calgary, Canada where we were staying at the Bow RiversEdge Campground. This is probably one of the nicest campgrounds we have ever stayed at in our RV (next to Blue Water Key Resort in Key West)! We were right on the river and there was a very large off-leash dog walking area right behind our RV site. Toby really enjoyed being able to be off leash and swimming in the Bow River. We were able to make it into Calgary on day and went to the top of the Calgary Tower where we got a 600 ft view of the surrounding city. What a great place to visit!
On June 9th, we arrived in the Tunnel Mountain Village II Campground in Banff. We were finally in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. The campground was spectacular, Banff was a great place to visit and hang out and the surrounding area did not disappoint... especially Lake Minnewanka, Cave and Basin and, of course, Lake Louise which was a beautiful mountain resort with lots of canoeing and hiking.
Take a ride on the Icefield Parkway from Banff to Jasper in Alberta, Canada. Along the way you can stop for a 5 hour hike on the Athabasca Glacier. These were all attractions for Adrienne and I as we made our way north on our Alaska Road Trip adventure. We stayed at the Whistlers campground in Jasper where we took some time to do our laundry and stock up on supplies. This was one of the most beautiful segments of our trip so far but, little did we know, there is much more beauty to follow!
We take off from Whistler's Campground in Jasper and head to Dawson Creek and mile 0 of the Alaskan Highway. Along our route, we saw many types of wildlife... bears, moose, bison, elk, deer and fox and many other types of animals. This encludes segment 3 driving days on the Alaskan Hwy given our strategy is a sprint to get to Alaska but we do stop at a few special places along the way to take in the scenery, the hot springs and special events. I hope you someday get a chance to take this adventure for yourself.
This portion of our trip takes us through the beautiful Yukon Territory which is one of the toughest and most gorgeous roadways as it winds it's way past the Kluane National Park and Reserve in Northern Canada. The mountains, rivers and enormous lake dominate the landscape which is covered in the beautiful Fireweed flowers. The roads were mostly good until you got north of Destruction Bay where the pavement disappears and the frost heaves, mud and potholes begin. I hope you enjoy the ride!
After 3 weeks of exploring, we have finally reached Alaska. We arrived in Fairbanks, AK on 6/21/2023 and were there for 4 days. While we were in Fairbanks we had many adventures including: - North Pole, AK - Northern Moosed RV Park - Chena Hot Springs - The Alaskan Pipeline - The Museum of the North - Pioneer Park - and of course, a local brewery! We had a great time in Fairbanks and would love to visit it again sometime.... maybe next time to see the Northern Lights.
On June 25th we arrived in Talkeetna, a cute little hippie town in the middle of Alaska where all of the mosquitos go for their summer vacations. If I was ever going to be stranded in Alaska, this is where I would want to be. Food, beer, beautiful scenery and art. I am proud to say I conquered the mosquitos in Talkeetna and am now knows as the Mosquito Master of Alaska. We also got to take a bush plane flight around Denali which was one of the highlights of our Alaskan adventure. If you enjoyed this video, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel.
After waiting 7 days for it to be clear enough to see Mt. Denali, we drove from Anchorage back up to Talkeetna to fly with Alaskan Bush Plane around Mt. Denali and the surrounding glacier fields. Sunday did not disappoint! I attached a GoPro Session to one of the pontoons of the float plane and turned it on. This is the edited version of our flight and is about 25 minutes in length. There is an issue with image stabilization in the video. Despite that, it is breathtaking. Enjoy!
We drove from Talkeetna to Anchorage through the beautiful Matanuska Valley which was a homestead settlement started in 1935 as a result of the New Deal Act passed by Congress. While in Anchorage hiked Flattop Mountain, visited Beluga Point, had a spa day at the Alyeska Resort in Girdwood and took Toby to an amazing dog park near our campground. Once again, Alaska never disappoints! Anchorage is much bigger than when we last visited in 2000 and it's beauty and surrounding mountains and glacier or stunning.

It's July 6th and we are in Homer, Alaska, 'Halibut fishing capital of the world'. Homer was a must see stop along the way,,, not just for the halibut, but for the shear beauty of this place. Hike with us on the other side of Kachemak Bay up to the Grewingk Glacier. Go halibut fishing with Jon. Tour downtown Homer and visit picturesque Seldovia. Homer is a highlight of our trip and a place I would most certainly go back to again.
Seward is aptly named "The Mural Capital of Alaska". We had a beautiful campsite right on Resurrection Bay and the opportunity to tour the town, view the murals, take a cruise through Kenai Fjords to see Humpback Whales, Orcas, glaciers, seals and sea otters. We hiked up to the Exit Glacier and hiked with the bears at Bear Lake. Seward is a must see destination in Alaska and the mountains and glaciers make a for some spectacular views. Join us as we tour the town and the surrounding areas.
In our dash to travel from Seward to Valdez, we had a 2 night stay in Whittier to get some laundry done and then a 1 night stay in Copper Center to see Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. In Whittier we drove through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, the longest tunnel in North America. We discovered that the biggest reason to visit Copper Center was to fish for King Salmon! I wish I would have more time there since I had my fishing pole... Dang!
We make the move to Valdez. The drive from Copper Center to Valdez is 104 of the prettiest mile we have driven. Forests, mountains, glaciers, rivers and waterfalls dominate the landscape. While we were here we explored the city, went to the salmon hatchery, kayaked Mud Bay and took a ride with Captain Fred on the Lu-Lu Belle to Kenai Fjords National Park where we saw orcas, seals and the Columbia Glacier. What an experience! I loved this place despite the weather.
On July 24, we rolled into Haines. While we were there we visited Chilkoot State Park, Battery Point Trail, the downtown area where we heard live music outside the brewery, the Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center, the American Bald Eagle Foundation and, course, the world famous Hammer Museum... well almost world famous. It was a great stop along our way. Toby enjoyed our hike and getting to play in the water along Mud Bay.
Visiting Skagway was a real gem on our trip to Alaska. It is a quaint and bustling cruise ship port that is rich in the history of the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. While we were there we visited the downtown, hike part of the Chilkoot trail (the bridge was out at mile 4) went out to the old town of Dyea, took the train up to the top of White Pass and hiked up to Lower Dewey Lake with Toby. It as a fun adventure and if your are ever in Alaska, this is a must-do stop! If you enjoyed this video, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE! We would really appreciate your support.
Its July 28th and we've spent 5 weeks traveling around Alaska but this is our last night. We are in our campground in Skagway and take a little time to recap our trip and talk about what we liked best and what we will do on our next trip. So disappointed that we have to say good bye to a dream we have looked forward to for so long. If you enjoyed this video, don't forget to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel.
As we leave Alaska for the last time on this trip, we embark on a 4 day sprint down the Stewart-Cassiar highway to the gold mining town of Quesnel, BC. We stayed at the Robert's Roost RV Park which was one of the top 10 campgrounds on our trip. We visited the Quesnel History Museum and learned about the life and times of Chow Dong Hoy who was a photographer that chronicled the lives of the folks that lived in the Cariboo Mountain area. We visited the gold mining towns of Barkerville, Wells and Bowron Lakes where 30 years ago I did the 72 mile solo canoe trip through the Cariboo Mountains.
As we approach the end of our trip, we arrive back in the USA to explore the Northern Cascades NP. Unfortunately, like most of Canada, a bad wildfire has a very big area of the park closed to visitors. But we found many other state and local parks to visit and explore. There is much in Northern Washington state left to be seen. If you enjoyed this video, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel. You can follow all of our adventures here at BreakAwayAdventures.net. We hope to see you on the trails sometime soon!
We arrive in Ridgefield, WA to visit our son Dale. Our first adventure was to Mount Saint Helens to explore APE CAVE which is a 2 mile long lava tube on the southern flank of the Volcano. Hiking in pitch blackness is a disorienting experience to say the least. At one point we got turned around trying to navigate a large rockfall and ended up hiking back towards the entrance. If you ever have a chance to visit Ape Cave, do it! Just make sure you have two working flashlights for each person... you do not want to end up with no light in this place.
This is the unedited version of our Alaskan Bush Plane flight around Mt. Denali. It is 90 minutes long from safety briefing to takeoff and landing but gives you a true feeling of what the flight was like. Enjoy!
Our first stop was MacDonald Forest Hill Resort just outside of Aberfoyle, Scotland. MacDonald Forest Hill Resort is beautiful and old. The only problem was that there was one (and only one) taxi driver in Aberfoyle and he was usually busy. Getting around was a challenge. We tried to hike up to the top of Ben Venue mountain but it was so muddy we had to turn around. As much as we liked the resort, we decided to move our stay Edinburgh so that we could get around more easily.
Our first 4 days in Scotland were spent in Aberfoyle... between Edinburgh and Glasgow... in the middle of nowhere! Aberfoyle is a town of less than 1,000 people. Our hotel, the MacDonald Forest Hill, is 5 miles outside of town. There is only 1 taxi in town to transport anyone that needs a taxi... do you see the problem here? We felt so luck to have a nice couploe drive us into town to do this hike. And then we saw the illusive Red Squirrel... but no Werewolves!
Stirling Castle is a medevil castle which dates back to 1530AD. We enjoyed exploring the grounds around the castle, especially the Church of the Holy Rude and the connected cemetery. Most of the gravestone are from the First and Second World Wars but some of them date back to 1680 AD. Quite a find! After visiting the castle and the palace, we made our way back to the pub at Portcullis. Such a great place to relax among locals and drink whatever beer they are pouring.
Edinburgh is a big city and getting around is a wee bit easier! It is an old city with parts of it dating back to 600 AD. A lot of the old buildings have been well preserved. Highlights of Edinburgh were the Christmas Market, the Whisky Experience, Holyroodroad Palace and Edinburgh Castle. We visited Mary King's Close which was an old section of the city that is underground... no sunlight, no running water, no sanitation services... it must have been a fun place to live!
We are getting ready for our epic journey across America to the Floriday Keys. Along the way we will visit Memphis, Nashville, Smoky Mountains, Congaree, St Augustine, Key Largo, Key West, Sarasota, St Petersburg, Pensacola, New Orleans, Vicksburg, Hot Springs and then home again. Just me, Adrienne and Toby, our dog.
The first 3 days of our trip are a sprint across the mid-west from Fort Collins, CO to Memphis, TN which neither of us have been to. This will be a chance to see someplace new and meet our old friend Drayton Mayers who was a fellow TeamLogic IT owner when we owned our franchise. There is not much to see as we cross Kansas and Missouri and into Tennessee. The Ozark Mountains were quite a site to drive through as we were nearing Memphis. Enjoy the car ride.
On our day in Memphis, we visited our friend Drayton Mayers, owner of TeamLogic IT of Memphis and hike over the Mississippi River. Toby enjoyed the Shelby Farm Dog Park although, we did not get any pictures of him in the dog park because it is 44 acres and we had no clue where he was! We finally found him running around in one of the two lakes. We had a great time and Memphis will be a regular stop for us on our way to Nashville to see Megan and Cody.
March 5, 2022: On our Tour of the Florida Keys, we left Memphis to drive to Nashville to see our daughter Megan. Cody was on a road trip with Dirks Bentley so we missed seeing him. Megan took us around downtown so we got to check the place out. Toby made friends with one of the bouncers outside a Honky Tonk and he got invited in to listen to live music... of course we got to go in as well since he was with us. While we were in there a man came up and wanted to take pictures of Toby for their website 'TheDogist.com'. What a celebrity! I'm sorry but I did not get pictures or video of any of this part... my bad. But here we are with our day in Nashville.
March 7th & 8th: Megan is with us and we are visiting Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge and hiking some of the trails at the park. It was overcast most of the time and since it is early March, there are no leaves on the trees so things look pretty sparse... until you get in the backwoods where the mosses, fungi and flowers are all very colorful. Toby was boarded at the Loving Care Kennel and the owner really enjoyed having Toby there. If you like this video, don't forget to subscribe on YouTube and you can follow us on this website. BreakAwaySolutions.net.
March 9th 2022 Adrienne, Toby and I took a drive out to Cades Cove and a lap around the scenic drive. We saw many homestead cabins, churches and, of course, raindrops. We followed the river out to Cades Cove and there were many small waterfalls and rapids along the route. It was a fun day and I would love to come back here when it is late spring/early summer and there is not so much rain. If you like this video, don't forget to subscribe on YouTube to see new ones as they are published. Enjoy!
March 10th 2022 Adrienne, Toby and I headed to Congaree in central South Carolina. Congaree is the largest track of old growth, bottom land hardwood forest left in the United States. It is in the flood plane of 2 rivers and, as you can imagine, quite damp and usually covered in water. We had a great time exploring the trails, wading through bogs and dodging raindrops. This is one of the dog friendly national parks so Toby had a blast... especially with we saw a small pack of wild pigs cross our path on the Kingsnake Trail. Unfortunately, we didn't get pictures of this encounter.
St. Augustine, FL is the oldest city in the USA. We were lucky enough to be able to stay there on March 13-15, 2022 on our way to the Florida Keys. It is a pretty dog friendly city with lots of history to explore. The downtown is quaint and rustic with shops, restaurants and attractions. The Castillo de San Marcus is a must see. If you like driving on a sandy beach, Anastasia Island is a lot of fun. Toby loved playing in the ocean.
We left Titusville and drove down to the Florida Keys. Finally! We stayed at Calusa RV Resort from March 17 through Mar 22, 2022. While we were there we visited Biscayne NP, Everglades NP and John Pennekamp Coral Reef SP. We also took advantage of the Calusa Pool and paddling our Kayak around the resort and mangrove lagoon where we were joined by a salt water Crocodile and small pod of Manatees. Life is Good!
Our journey from Key Largo to Bluewater Key RV Resort. You will get a brief tour of some of the Florida Keys including the 7 Mile Bridge. Bluewater Key RV Resort was fabulous and we got our own private cabana to hang out in. Would love to go back.
We really loved our time on Key West. There is so much to do and see and the town is alive with tourists and locals all doing their thing. While the diving is not great in the Keys, we hired a guide to take us inside the USS Vandenberg which was really cool! The food, the fish, the Stone Crab and the Key Lime Pies are to die for... Really! While I would not go back to Key Largo (and neither would Toby), I would love to go back to Key West and spend several weeks. Life is good!
Take a thrilling ride through the streets of Key West.
Downtown Sarasota is a great place to hang out and enjoy the gulf waters life. We met our good friends, Brian and Cathy Bonacci from TeamLogic IT. We got to go shopping at Detwiler's Farm Market which was the most amazing grocery store I've ever seen. Worth a stop if you are ever in town. We also visited St. Petersburg where Toby got to play at the dog park and walk in the dog parade (only the wrong way). We also visited beautiful St. Pete's Pier. I wish we had more time to visit.
New Orleans was one of our favorite stops on the Tour of the Florida Keys. There is a wonderful dog park, called City Bark, in the City Park area. We enjoyed the vibrant mood of Bourbon St. and the Beignets, and other food specialties, were to die for. One of the most sobering moments was when we went to visit the World War II Memorial. It was a exceptionally good multimedia presentation of the challenges and course of the second world war. I loved New Orleans... I can't wait to go back.
We visited Vicksburg, MI mostly to see the Vicksburg Military Park which is a memorial to the men who fought in the Civil War at the battle of Vicksburg. This was an important battle because if the Union Army won, they would control the shipping lanes on the Mississippi River and cut the Confederacy in two. It was a heart wrenching tour of the battle grounds and seeing the National Cemetery at the end was a stark reminder of the brutality of the Civil War and the men that died defending our freedom and way of life.
This was our last real stop on our Tour of the Florida Keys. Hot Springs, Kansas used to be the home of the wealthy that came to immerse themselves in the healing water of the hot springs. Hot Springs competed with the great spa towns of Europe as a special cure for whatever ails you. Toby enjoyed Hot Springs because he could go almost anywhere... He even got to enjoy lunch in the Superior Bathhouse Brewery. From Hot Springs it is a 3 day sprint of about 1,000 miles to get back to Fort Collins. This video captures not just Hot Springs but also a recap of our trip around the south.
AW, her Mom, and I teamed up with Charlie and Joanie for a 3 week adventure. This segment is all about the drive on I-70 over the Rockies. You'll get to go through the Eisenhower Tunnel and see our setup at the Slickrock Campground (which I would not recommend)
I have wanted to visit Arches for so long... we were in this area in February on the way back from our Tour of Arizona but we did not come to Arches because I didn't want a fly-by visit. I wanted to absorb all the park has to offer which is just what we did. My only regret is I did not get to see Landscape Arch which will be gone someday in the not-too-distant future due to erosion.
This national park has so much to offer. If you are a hiker, there are many trails that you can access that have some of the most sweeping vistas imaginable. We spent most of our time in the Islands In The Sky which is a huge mesa overlooking the Colorado and Green Rivers. Someday we will go back to visit the Needles and the Maze.
This gorgeous park surrounds a long wrinkle in the earth known as the Waterpocket Fold, with layers of golden sandstone, canyons and striking rock formations. Among the park's sights are the Chimney Rock pillar, the Hickman Bridge arch, and Capitol Reef, known for its white sandstone domes. In the north are the towering monoliths of Cathedral Valley
I really wanted to see this National Monument and it did not disappoint! It is rugged but majestic. Definitely a keeper! One of my favorite parts was Upper Dry Fork Trail which takes you through Peek-A-Boo & Spooky Gultch. Make sure you have the trail loaded into All-Trails or some other hiking App.
In 1909, paleontologist Earl Douglass discovered eight dinosaur bones in a sandstone hill in the Utah desert – beginning the Carnegie Fossil Quarry that achieved worldwide fame as one of the most ecologically complete assemblage of Late Jurassic dinosaurs. Today, visitors can see the remains of numerous species of dinosaurs that are 149 million years old.
The first stop of our journey was Santa Fe. It is a quaint and beautiful tourist town just south of the New Mexico border. We stayed at the Santa Fe Skies RV Park and hike the Dale Ball trail in the mountains that surround the town. Lunch at the Shed was a wonderful meal and experience. It's just too bad that a lot of the museums and shops were closed due to Covid. Santa Fe is definitely a place worth going back to especially since it is days drive from our house.
Located just outside Holbrook AZ, the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert National Park was one of the treasures of our trip. So much history and geology to be learned and experienced. If you are ever there, you need to check out the geohikes that they offer. We did the Blue Mesa and the Onyx Bridge hikes and they were amazing. Instead of following a trail, you navigate by landmarks. Truly an amazing and beautiful place. I want a piece of petrified wood!
After leaving Petrified Forest and Painted Desert, AW and I headed south to Tucson to see Uncle Dick and visit Saguaro National Park. I didn't realize but there are two sections to Saguaro...the west side where the Sonoran Desert Museum is located and the east side where nothing is located but there are many cool trails. The two sides are separated by about 40 miles and the city of Tucson. The sunsets and sunrises were fabulous!
Sedona is a small town and also the land of beautiful rock formations, Votexes and home of left over hippies! We hiked some wonderful trails including Red Rocks State Park, Cathedral Rock and Bell & Courthouse Rocks. We did a little shopping too but the stuff you buy downtown is a little our of my price range!
Our fifth stop on the Tour of Arizona was The Grand Canyon. We stayed in the Trailer Village RV Park which is centrally located near the Grand Canyon Village. We were there for about 3 full days which gave us time to explore the topside, do the Rim Trail and hike down into the Bright Angel Trail (but not all the way down). I have a segment in this video where I give you my perspective on hiking the Bright Angel Trail. The night before we left it snowed about 4-6 inches. This made towing the RV out of the park just that much more fun!
Our last stop on the Tour of Arizona (2021) was at Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah. Here you sit on top of a mesa looking down at the Colorado River below you as it meanders it's way through the twisted rock formations of the Canyonlands area. With beautiful views of the La Sal Mountains, low cloud cover and a dusting of snow on the ground, it made for a very surreal adventure.
